CR-V Blends SUV Roominess with Best Electronics

Honda creatively blurred the lines between Compact and Crossover SUVs with the current-generation CR-V, which blends SUV roominess with the latest, coolest electronic features you'll use every time you drive. Not only does the front-wheel drive CR-V offers an EPA-estimated 34 miles per gallon on the highway, and 27 around town, there is room to comfortably seat five adults and their gear.

For drivers planning routes through the mountains or similarly snowy or difficult terrain, the all-wheel drive CR-V is a good choice. The CR-V can sense loss of traction and automatically transfer power to the rear wheels, helping you grip the road and stay on course.

The CR-V is available in five trims: the base LX, then the EX, EX-L, EX-L with Navigation and the first-ever Touring Trim, which features the new Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver technologies.


Our VehiclesTEST featured the CR-V EX-L front-wheel drive version with Navigation. During our tests we felt the handling characteristics are as driver-pleasing as ever, and the driver is positioned nicely in a comfortable seat, steering is responsive and you have good visibility out the front, side and back windows.

Those driver ergonomics make the CR-V as easy to drive around town as it is on the freeway. In addition, a rearview backup camera comes standard on all trims and offers three camera angles to choose from: overhead, normal and wide view of the rear bumper so you can see behind you.

All CR-V trims are powered by the EarthDreams 185-horsepower, 4-cylinder engine, mated to a CVT automatic transmission (CVT stands for continuously variable transmission). During our performance tests the CR-V ran to a top speed of 88.4 mph in the quarter mile in 16.9 seconds. On the way to that number it went from 0 to 60 in 16.9 seconds and had a 50 to 70 mph passing speed time of 4.5 seconds.


The direct-injected 2.4-liter engine offers 11 percent more lower end torque, which we definitely appreciated while getting on the freeway where good acceleration is crucial. Stomp on the gas pedal and there's plenty of power as the CVT automatic runs super smoothly to get you up to freeway speeds, and you'll see how the RPMs climb to a high level but this CVT automatic is built to handle it.

Regarding storage, the CR-V offers 35.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity all the way aft, and there's plenty of room even with a full load of five passengers. Fold the rear seats down, easily done with a simple pull of a lever, and you increase the capacity to 70.9 cubic feet, large enough for camping gear, golf clubs, boogie boards and more.

One key interior feature is the 7-inch display audio--this is information central for your entertainment system. The display has a touch-screen interface that functions like a smartphone. Tap a menu icon, and then pinch or swipe the screen to use the intuitive features like system info, Honda Link connect, Navigation and XM radio.

Honda LaneWatch on EX and above trims improves your passenger-side visibility. A tiny camera on the passenger-side mirror turns on when signaling to the right, and live video on the Display Audio screen covers nearly four times more area than the view from the mirror.

Other interior features of note on all models include push-button start, steering wheel mounted controls and Bluetooth hands free link. A power-adjusted driver's seat in our test vehicle kept us comfortable, and the instrument panel features a tach to the left, speedometer in the center and fuel gauge to the right.--Doug Thompson
