TOYOTA AVALON 2013

Elegant Flagship Sedan, Improved Performance

High-tech innovation, detailed craftsmanship and attractive styling come together in the Toyota Avalon, the flagship sedan that offers improved performance and efficiency. Our test vehicle's 6-speed Electronically Controlled automatic Transmission is mated to a 3.5-Liter V6 engine that puts out 268 horsepower. This offers an an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 21 city and 31 highway. Our mileage testing showed an actual highway fuel economy of 34.1 miles per gallon, and that is 10 percent better than the EPA estimate.

Luxury Class

The Toyota Avalon proved during our tests that it is a first-class luxury sedan with a well-appointed interior, while on the highway it is fuel efficient and a pleasure to drive. The sculpted exterior helps the Avalon cut through the air with a low 0.28 coefficient of drag, and at Toyota design that improves fuel efficiency and enhances aerodynamic stability. The Avalon is available in four gas-only trim levels (Limited, XLE, XLE Premium and XLE Touring), as well as three hybrid versions.

The Avalon Hybrid is equipped with a modified version of the Hybrid Synergy Drive system that offers an EPA estimated 40-mpg combined fuel economy rating (40 city/39 highway). With its 17-gallon fuel tank, the Avalon Hybrid can offer over 600 miles of highway driving range.

The Avalon comes equipped with standard features like a Smart Key System that locks and unlocks the front doors when the key fob is within a short distance of the door handle. The key fob's transmitter also allows the engine to be started with the push of a button. Once inside, extensive use of premium soft-touch materials helps enhance the feeling of quality and comfort. -- Doug Thompson
