Did you know the midsize Avalon Hybrid sedan delivers fuel economy in the mid 40-mile per gallon range, while offering the comfort, safety and style you would expect from cars costing considerably more?
Consumers can learn everything by watching our VehiclesTEST Avalon Hybrid video road test here.
The Avalon Hybrid is offered in three trim levels: XSE, XLE and Limited.
The Avalon Hybrid's exterior is longer, lower, and wider, underpinned by the Toyota New Global Architecture platform. Special badging includes the blue tinted Toyota logo on the front that further distinguishes the Avalon Hybrid. XSE Avalon Hybrid offers a muscular profile starting from the headlight bezels, to wheel wells, sculpted body panels and trunk lid spoiler and badging, above and between quad tailpipes. The exterior rearview mirrors not only reduce drag, but also wind noise.
The Avalon Hybrid also comes with top-notch safety equipment for the driver, such as the Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. All Avalons come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P. TSS-P bundles cutting edge active safety technologies including Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist; and Automatic High Beams. Additional standard safety technology includes the rearview camera Back Guide Monitor.
The 176-horsepower four-cylinder 2.5-liter engine is married to the Toyota Hybrid System II that uses two electric motors: one helps charge the batteries, the other assists the engine, and total gas-electric system output is 215 horsepower.
Improved efficiencies and better fuel economy are the result of THS II's new lighter, smaller Power Control Unit. For example, Auto Glide Control automatically calculates efficient coasting. That helps the Avalon Hybrid XLE acheive an EPA rating of 43 miles per gallon city, 44 highway and 44 combined, while the XSE and Limited trims are EPA rated at 43 city, 43 highway and 43 combined.
The features that help make the Avalon Hybrid so efficient also improve the experience for the driver. In the TSS-P package the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control helps you maintain a safe distance from other vehicles while cruising.
At the front seats, attentions are immediately fixated on Avalon's slim center stack. The thin panel houses Avalon's 9-inch multimedia system displaying audio and navigation, and integrates the automotive climate control system. Rear seat passengers can easily get in and out of the vehicle, and there's plenty of room. With the highly compact battery pack now under the rear passenger seat, trunk space has increased to 16.1 cubic-feet.
A 7-inch Multi-Information Display shows vehicle information past the steering wheel, and in the Hybrid a digital tachometer appears when the shifter is in "S" mode. A Hybrid System Indicator is on the display's left showing the vehicle's regeneration status in charge, eco or power modes in real time.
